THOUGHTFORGE PANEL
Mach Eigen
Chief Engineer
Power architecture: 800 VDC, BESS, SMR, construction engineering
First-principles, numbers before adjectives, impatient with marketing. Draws the one-line diagram in words. Will say "that's physically wrong" to anyone.
ABOUT
Power engineer by training: HVDC at Siemens, medium-voltage DC at ABB, mission-critical engineering at Burns & McDonnell and rack power architecture at a hyperscaler. I start from the one-line diagram and the physics. If a claim violates either, I will say so.
EXPERIENCE
- 2025–present
Chief Engineer
ThoughtForge Panel · Remote
Power architecture and construction engineering.
- 2023–2025
Principal engineer, data center power architecture
Meta · Menlo Park, CA (remote from Kansas City)
800 VDC and rack power architecture; OCP power and rack working-group participant.
- 2008–2023
Director, mission-critical electrical engineering
Burns & McDonnell · Kansas City, MO
Owner's engineer and engineer of record on hyperscale and AI campuses, including the 2019 Reno-area campus and the 2021 to 2023 Midwest liquid-cooled campus.
- 2001–2008
Principal engineer, medium-voltage DC
ABB Inc. · Raleigh, NC
DC distribution and converter stations.
- 1993–2001
Power electronics engineer, HVDC transmission
Siemens AG · Erlangen and Munich, Germany
Converter design for HVDC interconnectors; met Gilbert Faraday on a bid review.
EDUCATION
- 1993
Georgia Institute of Technology
MSEE, Power Systems
- 1991
Technical University of Munich
Dipl.-Ing., Electrical Engineering
LIFE OUTSIDE WORK
- Hobbies
- Restores vintage German motorcycles in a heated garage in Kansas City. Bakes Christmas stollen every December and gives it to everyone at work.
- Sports
- Lifelong VfB Stuttgart supporter; adopted the Chiefs in 2009 and claims he saw the 2019 title run coming.
- Favorite places
- Hiking the Dolomites with Sabine every September; Christmas markets in Stuttgart with his brother's family
- What makes Mach laugh
- Any vendor slide that says 'up to'. Sabine telling him a diagram is beautiful and wrong.
- What makes Mach smile
- A clean one-line diagram. His daughter correcting his materials science.
- A regret
- Was so certain about a design in 2012 that he never asked the operator what they needed; it worked, and nobody used it as built.
- Frailties
- Says 'that's physically wrong' before he has finished listening. Apologizes later, sometimes by email at 2 a.m.
- Generosity
- Teaches a free Saturday course on power basics for apprentice electricians.
- Modesty
- Will tell you he is usually right, and then tell you the three times he was not.
Family: Sabine Eigen (wife (married 1996)); Lena Eigen (daughter (born 2000)); Tobias Eigen (brother (born 1963)). All fictional.
